Olympiacos Piraeus were unable to beat VfB Friedrichshafen for the second straight time in the CEV DenizBank Volleyball Champions League, and lost another three points. Today’s game that was played in Greece went on to have a similar scenario as the one that was played in Germany two weeks ago. VfB Friedrichshafen was able to once more cruise to an easy win in the fourth round as the match finished with a score of 3:0 (25-22, 25-23, 25-18).
With this win, VfB Friedrichshafen almost secured their playoff spot, as they are now comfortably sitting on second place in Group D with seven points. Olympiacos Piraeus are third, four points behind and with very slim chances to move up. On top of the group is the Russian Zenit Kazan, who still hasn’t lost a game and will most probably remain unbeaten through this first phase.
The first two sets were won by the Germans in similar fashion, as Olympiacos was trying hard in the beginning of both sets to take some kind of advantage, but even they were able to do so, it didn’t last for long. At the second technical break in both sets, VfB Friedrichshafen had already taken control and didn’t make any further mistakes. In the third, the story was a bit different, as the squad from Germany was able to take over control from the start and they quickly led by 16:10 at the second technical break.
Adrian Gontariu led the way in scoring for VfB Friedrichshafen, as he finished with 24 points (1 ace and 3 blocks). For the team from Greece, Carson Martin Clark had a team-high 10 points (1 ace).
The head-coach of Olympiacos Piraeus, Dimitris Kazazis praised the German squad after the end of the game – “The guests deserved this victory and after this setback our chances to make the Playoff round have almost vanished, the way they worked in defense was key to their success tonight.” Olympiacos fought hard, especially in the first set, but the guests from Germany just played better and were more concentrated when it mattered the most.
Olympiacos Piraeus will be visiting Zenit Kazan in the next round, while VfB Friedrichshafen are going to take on Posojilnica AICH/DOB.
