Round 15, English Premiership: Southampton – Manchester United 1-2, Match review:
Last Night at St. Mary stadium Southampton and Manchester United played the last game of round 15 and also a game that will determine who will be third in Premiership.
Southampton moral for this game was not high, they are on two game losing streak (Arsenal 0:1; Manchester City 0:3) and they didn’t win a game in almost one month.
On other side United moral is pretty high. After a long time they are actually fighting for position that lead into Champions league, but they are also on four game winning streak (Stoke 2:1; Hull 3:0; Arsenal 2:1; Crystal Palace 1:0).
Southampton boss Ronald Koeman change their usual 4-3-3 into little defense oriented 4-2-3-1:
Forster – Bertrand, Yoshida, Fonte, Clyne – Wanyama, Davis – Mane, Tadic, Long – Pelle
Luis van Gaal again changes the starting formation. In last four games Van Gaal sends four different formations, this time he chose to start in 3-1-4-2:
Gea – Rojo, Smailing, McNairs – Carrick – Young, Mata, Fellaini, Valencia – Rooney, van Persie
First danger was in 4’ when Shane Long header missed wide, and in 12’ van Persie scored for United lead. Van Persie sense that Fonte will send the ball toward his keeper, intercept the ball and easily scored for United lead. After that goal Southampton start sieging United goal and their attacker Pelle the most dangerous player, but he was unsuccessful in all his tries. In 31’ Pelle finally finds a way behind de Gea back, after some big confusion in the box Pelle somehow manage to get to the ball and scored the equalizer. Before the halftime we saw another Pelle attempt but his shot misses, on other side van Persie also tried with shot just outside the box but his shot also missed.
In second half Southampton was a better team but unfortunately for them this wasn’t Pelle night. In heat of Southampton attacks United get into the lead. In 61’ one long ball from Rooney into the box and small touch from van Persie was enough to get United into the lead. Until the end of the game Southampton tried to score the equalizer but Davis, Clyne and Bertrand wasn’t acquire in their attempts.
At the end Southampton got all stats on their side possession (55%-45%), total shots (15-3) and corners (5-1) even offside (4-1) but the most important goals were on United side.
United on other hand was pretty acquire from three shots they scored two goals, they are now on five games win and after long time in top three clubs in Premiership.
United got their win in another boring game with not high amount of chances, but that is the mark of big clubs they win even if they don’t play good. In next round we will see probably the biggest club rivalry in the Europe when at Old Trafford Manchester United go head to head vs. Liverpool.
Southampton losing streak is now three games, in next round they are going to play against Burnley and their fans are hoping that losing streak would stop there.
