Premier League Roundup – 25/11/17

Welcome to this weeks Premier League Roundup! Across the weekend 16 out of the 20 of the English Premier League teams were in action with a further game on Friday which ended in a 1:1 draw between West Ham United & Leicester City. There were not as many big fixtures this weekend as last weekend, but with Manchester United & Chelsea being separated just by goal and Chelsea having to face Liverpool today’s fixtures were very important for both teams. There was also few points separating positions 4 through to 7 and with 5th place Arsenal facing 7th place Burnley a win for either team was going to drastically effect the standings. This made the weekend a very dramatic day for football!

Saturday 25th November – Premier League Results:

Crystal Palace 2 – 1 Stoke City

The first match of the day saw 15th place Stoke City travel away to 20th place Crystal Palace. On paper this should of been an easy victory for Stoke, they have scored 13 points to Crystal Palace’s 5 before this match and after an uneventful first half Stoke did manage to go 1-0 up with a fantastic solo effort which saw him carry the ball from the halfway line dribble past Palace defenders and finishing with a wonderful goal in the 53rd minute. However Crystal Palace were quick to respond and just 3 minutes later Loftus-Cheek equalized by taking advantage of poor defending with a shot into the far post. It was looking like it was going to end in a draw but a goalmouth scramble in the 92nd minute saw Mamadou Sakho poke home a winner at close range while among the chaos.

This win for Palace indicates a changing of form for them, with them gaining a total of 5 points from their last 4 games, which is excellent considering they have only gained 8 points in total from their opening 13 games, this win gives Crystal Palace fans some hope of staying in the Barclays Premier League this year but there is still a lot of work to be done, this win still means they are in last place but the gap to escape the relegation zone has been closed to only 3 points. The match stats for the Crystal Palace vs. Stoke City game can be seen below:

Crystal Palace vs Stoke City stats

Manchester United 1 – 0 Brighton & Hove Albion

Man United vs. Brighton was a nail-biting match and looked like neither side were going to be able to break the deadlock. Both teams were evenly matched in every part of the field with neither team able to get a lot of shots on target. If either team was going to win it looked to be Brighton however as they had two excellent chances at a goal from Anthony Knockaert & Pascal Gross who both escaped the United defense and either of the chances could of easily ended up in a goal, Fortunes changed for Man Utd however as during the 66th minute Ashley Young launched a powerful shot at goal which hit Brighton defender Dunk and the deflection sailed over the goalkeeper Mat Ryan to gift Manchester United the only goal of the game.

This result was an incredibly lucky for the home side but it did showcase their excellent record at keeping goals out of their net, Man United have conceded just 6 goals so far this season and have recorded 26 clean sheets in their last 51 games across since the start of last season – 2016-2017! A fact Manchester United’s manager Jose Mourinho is very proud off! This win maintained their second place standing in the Barclay’s Premier League table and gave them an opportunity to pull away from Chelsea who were against a very determined Liverpool which was taking place at the same time as this game. Newcastle United 0 – 3 Watford

Newcastle United vs. Watford was the third match of the day and with just 4 points separating the two teams it was not going to be an easy fixture for either side. Newcastle started of the game very strong, dominating the possession and trying to make chances but were unable to score a goal. A lot of Newcastle’s early pressure was down the Watfords left hand side where Marvin Zeegelaar and Richarlison defending excellently and lead to many counter-attacks. From this excellent counter-attacking play Will Hughes scored an early goal in the 19th minute much to the shock of the Newcastle players and fans who thought they would of been the ones scoring a goal. Newcastle however carried on with a very dominate possession-orientated play but were still unable to score with them struggling to hit a shot on target.

The horror for the home supporters was compounded with an own goal by Yedlin in the 1st minute of injury time for the first half and then Watford scored a further goal in the second half with an excellent effort from Gray to secure the victory! This 3-0 victory for Watford was the biggest away win in the Premier League and is Newcastle’s second loss in a row. Despite losing the stats of the game were rather even with Newcastle having more possession and an equal amount of shots, but Watford leading on shots on target as shown in the match stats below:

Match Stats & lineup for Newcastle vs Watford

Swansea 0 – 0 AFC Bournemouth

19th Place Swansea City were at home and facing 13td place Bournemouth in the 4th Premier League fixture of the day. With a lot of pressure on Swansea city’s manager Paul Clement this was a vital fixture for Swansea and a win here could quickly turn favour for Paul Clement back to a positive view in the eyes of both the Swansea fans & the Swansea owners. Swansea were however struggling to hit a shot on target all day, despite 10 shots on goal only 1 was on target and did not end in a goal. Bournemouth were looking a lot more likely to score with 5 shots on target but were also unable to make any of these into a goal ending the game with a 0-0 draw. This result was much more favourable to Bournemouth who despite being higher in the league can contribute this to a recent run of form where they have gained 10 points out the last 15 available catapulting them up the Premier League, and this results sees them gain another spot as Newcastle lost and Bournemouth now are sat in 12th ahead of Newcastle by goal difference!

Swansea Vs. Bournemouth Match Stats & Lineup

Tottenham Hotspur 1 – 1 West Bromwich Albion

Tottenham Hotspur were home in their temporary stadium Wembley today in their Premier League fixture vs. 17th place West Brom. This football match was a very important one for Spurs who were looking to recover from last weeks loss to Arsenal. Tottenham had an awful start to the game while at just 4 minutes into the first half they conceded a goal with West Brom’s Rondon picking up the goal. Tottenham looked to quickly recover playing a very attacking orientated game with the majority of their touches being in West Brom’s half with large amounts of action in the West Brom penalty area. Tottenham had a staggering 73% of possession, 25 shots of which 5 were on target and 8 corners but were unable to score an equalizer until the 74th minute with an excellent goal by Harry Kane.

This was not the result Tottenham were looking for or the result that they had deserved, they was by far the best team on the pitch but the early goal from West Brom along with a large number of shots being off-target denied them a vital 3 points. This result means that Manchester City are likely to increase their lead at the top of the table and Man United increase their lead at second place. This match was an excellent opportunity at overtaking 3rd place Chelsea who were away at a difficult fixture at Liverpool but today just was not the day for Tottenham and one which they will be looking to forget at the earliest opportunity!

Tottenham vs. West Brom match stats & lineups

Liverpool 1 – 1 Chelsea

The final Premier League fixture of Saturday 25th November 2017 was a tough clash between 3rd place Chelsea & 6th place Liverpool with a win for Chelsea being vital to maintaining their position in the Barclays Premier League and a win for Liverpool giving them the opportunity to move up to 5th position for that all important Europa League spot!

After an uneventful first half the action quickly hotted up in the second half as both teams went for the win with Liverpool having 16 shots to Chelsea’s 11. Liverpool were the first to open the scoreline with an excellent goal from Salah in the 65th minute. Salah is the Premier League’s stop scorer and always look destined to score with numerous opportunities. Chelsea did however equalize 20 minutes later with an excellent strike by Willian who is on excellent form currently with 3 goals in his past 4 games. This game could of very easily ended in a victory for Liverpool with a fantastic attempt on goal by Mohamed Salah in the final minutes of the game which was saved by Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.

This result continues Liverpool’s excellent record in the Premier League when versus Chelsea, including this game they have won 2 games and drew 4 with 0 losses in their past 6 games. However they have not beaten Chelsea while at home since May 2012. Liverpool remain the only team that Chelsea have been unable to beat in the Barclay’s Premier League since Antonio Conte was appointed as the manager of Chelsea.
