Welcome to a midweek edition of the Premier League Roundup! Between today & tomorrow all 20 of the English Premier League teams were in action with 3 of these games taking place today including games involving Chelsea, Burnley & Watford all of which will be wanting some much-needed points!
Tuesday 12th December – Midweek Premier League Results:
Burnley 1 – 0 Stoke City
Burnley vs Stoke City was a nail biting game between an in-form Burnley and a struggling Stoke City. And the game as a whole was very void of action, Burnley had the majority of possession and had a similar amount of shots to Stoke but were struggling to hit the target as they only got 2 shots on target in the entire game. The only goal of the game came in the 89th minute by Burnley substitute Barnes. It is a game that Burnley & their fans will be happy to win but they must all be feeling very lucky as the score could of easily ended in a draw or even a win for Stoke if any of their shots on target had lead to a goal!
Crystal Palace 2 – 1 Watford
Crystal Palace vs Watford was one of the fans both sets of fans were looking forward to, as of late Crystal Palace have been on an excellent run of form despite being in the relegation zone meanwhile Watford have been in the top half of the Premier League something their fans would not have been expecting at the start of the season. The game began very strong for Watford who controlled the game perfectly from the 3rd minute on wards where Janmaat had scored the opening goal. From here to the first half break & beyond Watford were firmly in control and Crystal Palace were struggling to make an impact.
After the first half break little had changed and Watford were firmly in control but could not get a second goal, in fact across the entire game they had only gotten 2 shots on target despite keeping Crystal Palace in their own side of the field for the majority of the game. There was a stroke of brilliance towards the end of the game as Crystal Palace’s Sako bundled in an equalizer which ultimately resulted from Watford being a man down following Cleverley’s red card in the 87th minute. Crystal Palace rode this momentum forward and managed to get a second goal in the 90+2 minute. This second goal was scored by McArthur with a beautiful side-foot after a well-timed Wilfried Zaha cross. Crystal Palace fans could not be more pleased by this result as it lets them escape the relegation zone but it is a day that Watford fans will sooner want to forget as they will be asking themselves what if Cleverley never got a red card.
Huddersfield Town 1 – 3 Chelsea
The final match of the day was between 3rd place Chelsea & Huddersfield town who as of late had been struggling. Huddersfield had lost 4 out of their 5 games before the match so hopes were not high for them to come away with a win here. Chelsea were very strong in the first half and pounced on any difficulties Huddersfield experienced. They had goals in the 23rd minute & 43rd minute by Bakayoko & Willian respectively. Bakayoko’s goal was a beautiful clip past the Huddersfield defense as he made the most out of the Huddersfield keeper slipping on the wet grass whereas Willian scored with a beautiful header.
Chelsea continued their strong performance into the second half with Willian setting up a goal for Pedro in the 50th minute. Despite the one sided match substitute Laurent Depoitre headed a late consolation for Huddersfield but it was far too late to make an impact. Chelsea was very dominant in all areas of the field controlling the majority of possesion while having much more shots & shots on target than Huddersfield as evident in the match stats below:
