When Liverpool and Arsenal will go head to head this Sunday, there won’t be a single player in both sides that has played for the other one. However as the history that is mentioned below suggests, some Liverpool as well as Arsenal players have swapped jerseys to play for the other side.
Here are 4 players that have played for both giants of English football:-
For the Spaniard that was signed by Liverpool post their Champions League winning season in 2006, Jermaine Pennant has played for both teams in his career. Now playing in the newly inaugurated Indian Super league for Pune FC side, the Englishman spent 6 years at Arsenal from 1999-2005 scoring 3 goals in the process.
However for a journey that now seems as strange, Pennant was sold to Birmingham from where Liverpool eventually bought him. He spent 3 years at Liverpool scoring 3 goals in 55 appearances for the club.
For a player who has won the Premier League, Serie A and Champions League in his career, Anelka has played for 11 different teams during his time as a professional footballer at the top tier. Starting his career at Paris Saint Germain before eventually moving to Arsenal a season ago, Anelka was one of the first signings made by Arsene Wenger in his 2nd season in-charge at the club.
After scoring 23 goals in 65 appearances during his 3 year stay at the High-bury during which he won the Premier League and FA Cup double, the Frenchman to Real Madrid. However for the journey that now seems audaciously long, Anelka roamed both Spain and Italy before setting his foot on English soil again when he was loaned to Liverpool by PSG.
As expected, his career at Liverpool was short lived during which he managed 4 goals for the Merseyside outfit. After the end of his loan spell, he was sold to Manchester City by his parent club Paris Saint Germain.
When Kolo Toure was signed by Liverpool from Manchester City last season on a free transfer, it was thought that the Ivorian would spell time in the sidelines looking at the depth of Liverpool defense. However for reasons that cannot be deciphered now, Toure is now the 1st team starter for Liverpool after their poor start to the Premier League campaign.
However unlike the above mentioned players, Kolo Toure is regarded as a Legendary figure in the Arsenal camp courtesy to the services he has provided to the gunners. In his 7 year stay at the Emirates which includes an INVINCIBLE season for Arsenal, Kolo Toure was always a permanent figure in Arsene Wenger’s plans.
Although some players are reminded by their time in a particular club, the Israeli Yossi Benayoun is famous for his goal against Real Madrid for Liverpool colors. Even though Liverpool travelled to Santiago Bernabeau as the under-dogs that day in 2009, it was his goal that proved to be a match-winner for Liverpool.
After the departure of Rafael Benetiz from Liverpool, the Israeli was sold to Chelsea for a fee in the region of 5 million pounds. But due to lack of game time which often is the case for new players at Chelsea, he was loaned to Arsenal in the 2011-12 season during which he scored 4 goals for the gunners in 19 appearances.
