Soccer News: It may have come as a shock to many across the footballing circle that Arjen Robben missed out again in the shortlisting for the Ballon D’Or. The Dutch and Bayern Munich winger was a hot favorite to be shortlisted in the final three for the coveted football prize but has once again been snubbed for the award. Instead, similar names of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi will compete with a first time entry, Manuel Neuer.
Arjen Robben had a fantastic season with both the club and country, displaying jaw dropping performances throughout. He was phenomenal at times, winning games on his own through sheer skill and class. Robben won the BundesLiga with his club Bayern Munich and continued his fine run in the World Cup 2014 for his national team.
Robben helped the Dutch reach the semifinals of the biggest footballing stage, the most noteworthy performance coming against defending champions Spain. A season where he scored 23 goals in 51 matches and helped his side to the title, Robben would have certainly expected to be among the best three candidates for the Ballon D’Or.
On his exclusion from the trio who will battle it out to be the world’s best, Robben had nothing but praise for the selected three candidates and applauded their marvel and game. When asked, Robben said, “Messi, Ronaldo and Neuer deserved it, because they are fantastic players.”
Robben has no hard feelings on missing out as he believes it was decided on votes and was completely out of his hands. He said, “It comes down to a vote, so I can’t do anything about it. It’s out of my own hands. I had a great year and did everything I could. But there are a lot of players that really show great things.”
Robben has certainly excelled in 2014 and has had a marvelous year. His blazing performances and match winning goals made him a standout contender for the prize. Despite all that, Robben has remained extremely humble, has praised the shortlisted trio and has spoken out as a true professional. His attitude is certainly one for all football players and fans to follow. A man with such incredible skills and achievements is a true role model when it comes to conduct and attitude off the pitch.
