Today featured the first two of the FIFA World Cup round of 16 stages with the winners going through to the quarter finals. The two games saw France vs. Argentina & Uruguay vs. Portugal which were always going to be closely fought games with no real favourite.
France vs. Argentina

Argentina came into the game as rank 5 in the FIFA rankings and France came in as rank 7 which would indicate a small advantage to Argentina; however France had a very comfortable group stage whereas Argentina struggled massively even when facing much lower ranked sides.
The first half started with a strong performance by France with a free kick by Antoine Griezmann narrowly missing the back of the goal and instead hitting the cross bar. However just a few minutes later in the 13th minute France was gifted a penalty though a bad tackle by Marcus Rojo on Mbappe which Griezmann comfortable slotting into the back of the net to give France the advantage. Much later in the 41th minute with a fantastic long shot by Angel di Maria to equal the score at 1-1.
Argentina started the second half very strong with Mercado giving Argentina the lead in the 48th minute following an assist by Messi however this did not last long as France equalized in the 57th minute with a fantastic strike by Pavard. France then put the game far out of Argentina’s grasps following two goals by Mbappe. Argentina did however score another goal late into injury time in the 93rd minute with a header by Aguero.
