When the important ceremony of Ballon d’Or ceremony was held yesterday in Zurich, there was a stiff competition between Ronaldo, Messi and Neuer about the winner of the prestigious award. However as it turned to be in the end, it was none other than Cristiano Ronaldo who won the Ballon d’Or award for second consecutive year. It was his 3rd Ballon d’Or title as a whole which made him the best player in the world for 2014. But one thing which makes 2014 title different from other years was that Cristiano Ronaldo was far above his competitors in the competition. His ruthless goal streak and several title winning performances made him all but clear favorite for the title. Here are 4 reasons why 2014 was a year of Cristiano Ronaldo and he deserved the Ballon d’Or title more than anybody else on the list.
1- Most Goals in 2014:
If I say that last year was Ronaldo’s year, than this statement is no exaggeration. The Portuguese Superstar was in red hot form throughout the La Liga as well as UEFA Champions League Campaign. He was impossible to stop for opposing defenders and finding the back of the net in almost every game. As a result, Ronaldo scored 61 goals in 2014, more than anybody else in the entire 2014. That gives him a clear edge over the likes of Messi for the title race.
2- Most Goals Ever in one UCL Campaign:
The Los Blancos won their 10th UEFA Champions League title last year, and Ronaldo played a vital role in that title winning campaign. From the Group Stages to the final match, Ronaldo was in supreme form and scoring goals for fun. He scored 17 goals in UEFA Champions League 2013-14, which is the most by any player in the competition’s entire history.
When Barcelona won nothing in 2014, FC Bayern Munich were restricted to a 2 national titles, Real Madrid were winning titles for fun. Apart from the La Liga title, the Spanish Giants won everything they took part in 2014. From UEFA Champions League to Club World Cup to Copa Del Rey to UEFA Super Cup, Ronaldo and co had an exceptional 2014. And with his goal scoring touch, Ronaldo was a key catalyst for such a superb campaign of Real Madrid.
4- Personal Awards:
Apart from winning titles for his side, Ronaldo’s cabinet remained full from his individual awards as well. The Real Madrid striker won Di Stefano award, La Liga pichichi, European Golden Shoe, UEFA’s Best Player in Europe and many more awards in 2014. So it’s crystal clear now that why Cristiano Ronaldo was deservedly given the award of Ballon d’Or last night in Zurich.
